FLUJO – System for calculation of o/d matrices at intersections

INNPACTO 2012 Sub-programme

The purpose of the project is to develop a tool that will enable actual incoming and outgoing flows at intersections to be obtained by using techniques to merge data from laser sensors and image-processing.

The purpose of the product is to develop a highly portable tool to obtain actual incoming and outgoing data (origin/destination matrices) at intersections automatically, under all temporal and weather conditions, by using techniques to merge data from laser sensors and image-processing.

This basic technology is considered because many problems such as shadows or changes in lighting, which are difficult to detect or correct using techniques based on image-processing alone, can be dealt with easily with depth maps on 3D-imaging or laser sections. However, such depth-measuring systems provide no information on the object’s footprint, such as the colour or publicity material on the vehicle, among other sources of information, which hinder the process of assigning an identifier to each vehicle. In congested-traffic situations it would be practically impossible to tell one vehicle from another using 3D or laser cameras, while image-processing can provide such other attributes as colour and geometrical elements to facilitate the task.
